With the horrible images coming from the devastating earthquake in Mexico filling our screens, we need no more graphic reminder that we could be next. We have prepared a quick rundown of the top items you and your family may need to survive a disaster.

WATER
After an earthquake water becomes an immediate need. The 2 basic options are filters and storage. A variety of filters from straws to larger units are available.
Water storage containers can give you more longer term options.
Packaged water is also a great option for needs immediately after a disaster. You should consider these for your cars and offices too.
FOOD
After water, food will quickly become an issue in most disasters. Many long shelf life options exist that you can put away and forget about until you need them.
FIRST AID
A good first aid kit is another must have for any disaster. Many options exist for cars and home use.
DISASTER KITS
One of the easiest way to prepare is to buy kits for the home and car. These usually contain basic supplies to help you get through the first days after an event.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
After an earthquake fire department resources will be stretched thin and the water supply may not be flowing. Having good fire extinguishers is a good idea whether for disaster or everyday use.
NATURAL GAS SHUT OFF TOOL
It’s important to know where your natural gas shut off is and how to turn the gas supply to your home off. A wrench or gas shut off tool will be needed.
LIGHTING
A back up plan to provide lights when the power fails will be crucial to surviving a disaster. While candles can be used, they add fire risk. Good LED lights can provide a safe and somewhat longer term solution.
RADIOS & VARIOUS SUPPLIES
You’ll want to have at least an AM/FM radio to be able to get news, as well as many other items to make survival easier and more comfortable.
