WRONG WAY HEAD ON CRASH ON 55 FREEWAY

A suspected DUI driver managed to drive from Costa Mesa to Anaheim Hills the wrong way on the 55 freeway at speeds up to 100 MPH before he struck another vehicle head on near the 91 freeway.

As 911 was receiving calls about the wrong way driver going northbound in the southbound lanes, he sped past a CHP Sergeant nearly hitting him head on near the 405 freeway. Two other CHP units ran traffic breaks to try to stop the driver but due to his high speeds he managed to blow past both breaks.

The man continued northbound in the southbound lanes with several CHP units tracking him from the northbound side. Those units witnessed him hit a BMW head on near Lincoln Avenue causing an horrendous wreck that blocked all lanes.

CHP Officers jumped the center divider and ran to help the injured. The wrong way driver and the solo male driver he hit were both transported to trauma centers in critical condition.

All lanes of the southbound 55 freeway were closed as Firefighters treated the inured and the CHP investigated the crash. The driver of the Mercedes Benz that was traveling the wrong way is believed to have been driving under the influence and may be arrested for Felony DUI.
